In general, at 16″ oc, from a 8 to 12 foot span, you would need a 2×6 rafter, while from a 13 to 16 foot span you would need a 2×8 rafter. ![]() ![]() What I wanted to illustrate with this graph is that beyond about 73% compression ratio, performance falls off a cliff. Here's a graph of compression ratio versus time, sorted by compression ratio, for all compared archive programs: The raw data on the comparison page is a little hard to parse, so I pulled the data into Excel and created some alternative views of it. People looking for good (but not ultimate) and fast compression should have a look at those two programs. Both SBC and WinRK are capable of compressing the 301 MB testset down to 82 MB in under 3 minutes. WinRAR and SBC 0.970 score very well on efficiency. The top two spots are held by an archiver I've never heard of, SBC. Its scores of 1871 (Good) and 1983 (Best) rank third and fourth out of 200. ![]() The basic idea is a compressor X has the same efficiency as compressor Y if X can compress twice as fast as Y and resulting archive size of X is 10% larger than size of Y.Īnd sure enough, if you sort the results by efficiency, WinRAR rises directly to the top. The most efficient (read: useful) program is calculated by multiplying the compression time (in seconds) it took to produce the archive with the power of the archive size divided by the lowest measured archive size.Ģ ^ (((Size/SmallestSize)) - 1) / 0.1) * ArchiveTime The author measured both compression size and compression time to produce an efficiency metric: Consider this recent, comprehensive multiple file compression benchmark. When I compressed all the C# code snippets, the difference was enormous:īut even in an apples-to-apples comparison, RAR offers some of the very best "bang for the byte" of all compression algorithms. This is a big deal, because it can result in a substantially smaller archive when you're compressing a lot of files. RAR also supports solid archives, so it can exploit intra-file redundancies. If you're worried the person on the receiving end of the archive won't have a RAR client, you can create a self-extracting executable archive (or SFX) at a minimal cost of about 60 KB additional filesize. ![]() It produces much smaller archives in roughly the same time. But you should use it, because RAR, as a compression format, clobbers ZIP. WinRAR fully supports creating and extracting ZIP archives, so choosing WinRAR doesn't mean you'll be forced into using the RAR compression format. It's frequently updated with neat little feature bumps and useful additions two I noticed over the last year were dual-core support and real-time stats while compressing, such as estimated compression ratio and predicted completion time. And WinRAR is very much a living, breathing piece of software. There's a reason WinRAR won the best archive tool roundup at DonationCoder. In contrast, WinRAR is full-featured, powerful, and integrates seamlessly with the shell. I particularly dislike the limited "compressed folder wizard" I get by default in XP and Vista. Sure, ZIP support is built into most operating systems, but the support is rudimentary at best. WinRAR has become increasingly essential to my toolkit over the last year, so this month, I'm buying a WinRAR license. When I wrote Today is "Support Your Favorite Small Software Vendor Day", I made a commitment to spend at least $20 per month supporting my fellow independent software developers. ![]() ![]() ![]() Why 1.5 you might ask? Well simple: that is the thickness of a 2x4 and I had plenty of those I could use as spacers during the build. So how far did I have them come off the ground? Well I chose 1.5" I don't want them to touch the ground because that is a spot where moisture could get trapped and lead to premature rot in the posts. After some thought I decided to have them go nearly all the way to the ground. I also had to decide how far the posts were going to go down the side of the steps. like the previously installed handrail had been done. So I went with 3 posts spaced every other step. Let's see: fewer parts, simpler install, overall stronger build? Yup, I like my idea betterīecause there IS a handrail already installed, I wanted to match it so the new one didn't stand out. ![]() This wound reduce my mounting hardware to just a few cement anchors and would end up being much stiffer. You can see from the pictures that one side of the stairs already has handrails installed, there the builder opted to mount the posts to the top of the steps with some specialized mounting brackets and braces. I decided that I could either mount the posts into the top of the steps or on the side face of the stairs. Putting the posts into the dirt wasn't going to be an option. Loop End Loop End: A good option for people walking on the ramp to provide additional stability.I recently found myself in need of a new handrail on the steps coming down from my back porch. Straight End Straight End: This is the standard option and is more economical. You may also select to have a loop on just one end of the ramp. These shorter handrail sections can remain assembled when taking down the ramp and putting into storage or transporting.Īdditionally, there are two options for the ends of your handrails, Straight End (also called square end) or Loop End. The sections typically come in 6′, 5′, and 4′ lengths, and there will be a 4″ gap between handrail sections on the ramp. The Section option is designed for portability when the user wants the option to quickly set up and take down the ramp. This option may require two people for set up. However, Tesla, in this as in so many other things, likes to go to extremes. (Note that this chart probably does not do full justice to Tesla's success in negotiating good payment terms with suppliers as more recent values are depressed by that temporary portion of inventory increase which is in transit to non-North American markets). YCharts will provide you with that metric for Tesla. The delay achieved by the manufacturer selects the relative strength of the manufacturer in its negotiation with suppliers and many financial analysts track this number by looking at days payable outstanding. This is in no way reprehensible on Tesla's part - almost every manufacturer negotiates a delay in payments with its suppliers, as this is a simple and often cheap way to provide short-term financing, and, so far as we know, Tesla is paying the suppliers in accordance with their agreements. In simple terms, Accounts Payable are amounts for which Tesla has been billed by its suppliers but which it has not paid. ![]() What are Accounts Payable and why are they important for Tesla? Such an undertaking is much too large for me to attempt today and so I will be looking just at one portion of the current liabilities - accounts payable and the related portion of accrued liabilities. Then we would have to look at the non-cash current assets and see how quickly they could be turned into cash and whether they could realize the value at which they are carried in the balance sheet - for example, can the inventory be sold at current prices, or will it need additional discounting? ![]() To assess the likelihood of such an event, we would have to look at each item in the current liabilities and determine the likelihood of the liability being called without Tesla being able to replace it with another liability which avoids the requirement to pay out cash (or, more precisely, provides new funds to pay out the expunged liability). To put this in simple terms, if everyone who has right to get money from Tesla over the next 12 months asked for it, and if Tesla used all its cash, sold all its inventory and called in any money that it has a right to over the same period, Tesla would still be $1.7 billion short. The crucial takeaway is the massive $1.7 billion working capital deficit. I have adjusted the above for the $920 million convertible which was redeemed for cash in March, but have otherwise left it as it was in the 10-K. Here is a simplified view of Tesla's working capital, taken from Tesla's 2018 10-K: Specifically, many of us who have come from the financial industry tend to look at the working capital deficit - cash plus assets which can be realized within the next 12 months less liabilities which will or can be payable within the next 12 months. ![]() Full self-driving, the Tesla mobility network and the cars which appreciate rather than depreciating are their expected nirvana.īears tend to be a little more short-term focused.
